To Campus Seniors

It was late September 1980. At the beginning of my senior year of undergraduate work at Miami University I made a decision to place my entire future in the hands of Christ. On an otherwise unmemorable evening I found myself stone-sober in my frat house rack room at 3AM, unconditionally surrendering to the Lord, who only then I recognized as the “King of my campus”, the “King of my relationships”, the “King of my worries”, the “King of my future”...indeed the King of all.

Shortly into my “fast-track” growth in Christ that autumn while meeting with another fraternity brother (who was now showing me how to grow in God-dependent Christly character, competency and worldview), I asked which seminary or vocational ministry I might pursue upon graduation. His shocked response was why would I abandon my calling to serve in the “American business and political mission field” so cavalierly? Frankly I had never thought of it that way. Twenty-five years of business and political ministry later I still rejoice in that arresting question.

Has God called you to “full time ministry”? Of course He has! He has called us all into full time missions. The real questions are: “Where is my mission field?” and “Who is the mission force (the team) with whom I am to connect for further encouragement, support and accountability?” The answers God clearly gave me (and has been pleased to re-enforce is) that he is also “King of the marketplace”.

Perhaps you are called and need to be “sent” to the mission field of the American marketplace. But the fact of the matter is that the vast majority of us leave campus only to enter into a lifelong ministry without a map, without confidence of God’s leading and often feeling second-rate. The CampustoMarket Bridge project will hopefully help many (maybe you) to ford the cultural river to your life’s work of ministry in the marketplace.
