Thank you for your interest in the Avondale Elementary Tutoring Program! We’re glad that you desire to help Avondale’s students improve their reading skills.
You don’t have to be a reading specialist to tutor a child—the skills you will need are simple and easy to learn. Each tutor is assigned to a student and is provided with a folder of materials appropriate for the student’s reading level.
The tutoring takes place during the school’s lunch hour on a day of the week that is best for you (see application form).
Due to renovations on the Avondale Elementary building, the student body will be located at the Watkins Elementary School during the 2007-2008 school year. Watkins Elementary is located at 1486 Watkins Road, Columbus. An after-school tutoring session for Mount Carmel College of Nursing volunteers will be held at the Gladden Community House, 183 Hawkes Avenue at the corner of Avondale Avenue.
To apply to the program please complete the application form and the background check form and mail them, along with a photocopy of your driver’s license, to the address below. Once these have been received and processed, we will notify you of the day and time you can begin.
Tutoring will start the week of October 1, 2007. New and returning tutors are required to attend an orientation session. Sessions will be held at Watkins Elementary School from 12-1 pm on September 18 and 21 and at Mount Carmel College of Nursing from 4-5 pm on September 17 and 20.
If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me. Thank you again for your desire to make a difference in the life of an inner city child.
Sincerely,
Karen O’Brien, Volunteer Coordinator
